Names of buried soldiers will appear at Sukov cemetery

At the cemetery from the First World War, located in the Rusyn village of Sukov, Medzilaborce District, plates with names of the soldiers buried there will appear, as the newspaper Korzár reports.

The soldiers’ names were obtained thanks to cooperation with volunteers from the Czech Republic, where many of the soldiers came from.

As Martin Drobniak from Klub vojenskej histórie Beskydy/The “Beskydy” Club of Military History said in the Korzár article, plates will be also ascribed to the soldiers about whom there is no certainty concerning the location of the remains. It is only known that the soldiers died in the Sukov area. Volunteers from Hungary and Slovakia have already built a pavement in the center of the cemetery, also steel bases were installed, upon which wooden crosses were put. There is also an authentic monument from the time of the War at the cemetery.

There are more than 180 soldiers buried at the cemetery, mainly the soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army. There are 66 graves, as well as common and mass graves. The cemetery is basically maintained by the local authorities. The Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic, as well as The Austrian Black Cross granted funds for the restoration. The Austrian organization takes care of Austro-Hungarian military cemeteries all over the world.
