According to the Uzhgorod.net.ua portal, Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Head, Hennadii Moskal, visited Medzilaborce town on Sunday, 9 October 2016. He wanted to see an exhibition in the Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art.
“We wanted to invite Andy Warhol’s family for the opening of the square dedicated to him in Minaj village, near Uzhorod,” as Moskal is cited by the portal.
“As it turned out, the closest family of the artist famous all over the world does not live in Slovakia, that is why we invited the management of the Museum of Modern Art to Zakarpattia. Apart from that, an idea arose to make an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s works in the Oblast’s administration office on the day of the square’s opening. In order to realize this idea, we will ask Consulate General of Slovakia in Uzhorod to help us. Andy Warhol’s exhibition could turn out to be a great artistic event not only within Zakarpattia, but also far outside its borders,” continued Moskal.
On 8 April 2016, Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Head, Hennadii Moskal, as part of a law on “decommunization” signed changes to the names of seven streets and one square within the Vinohradiv, Irshava, Mukachevo, Tjachev and Uzhorod regions. In the village Minaj, near Uzhorod, October Square was changed into Andy Warhol Square. A sign with the artist’s portrait, stylized to look like Pop Art, is ready. The official date of the square’s opening has not been announced yet.
